Weston Snowboards

Video Production: Educational Documentary

“Beyond The Backcountry”

Weston has become a really good friend to GUM and we are extremely proud to be a collaborator of their incredible journey as a leader in the snow sports industry, not only as a snowboard company (and yes, they do make a few pairs of rock’n skis), but as a passionate ambassador for our National Forests who leads by example.

We worked with Weston on an indoctrination email series that is designed to welcome new subscribers through a 3 day email series that shares discounts, a true introduction to the Weston team/brand/philosophy, as well as their best curated content. This has raised not only engagement with their email subscribers, but also extends to their social media and website engagement through the specific email copy.

For the video project, we coordinated with Weston Snowboards, the National Forest Foundation, the National Forest Service, and West Jefferson Middle School to create this touching piece. The graphic design students were challenged to strictly adhere to Weston’s branding guidelines while using the National Forest Foundation as a theme to produce t-shirt and swag gear designs. The project ultimately became an incredible learning experience for the students in both branding and design, but more importantly about our National Forests and the ways we protect and serve them for today and our future.

The Right Gear for The Shoot

Our approach to filming the project came down to understanding the nature of the story and meeting those needs with he right gear. When filming a  documentary style video/film it’s good to have a light gear load to be able to move quickly to get the shot or set up an interview. Everything we used to film this project fit into a small backpack, keeping us light and mobile. The classroom setting can be cramped and lighting from ceiling florescent lights are never that flattering to the subject, but it worked for our needs. Everything except a locked off shot for interviews can be pretty unpredictable, especially in a middle school classroom where students are less likely to reveal a transformational moment when they know they are being filmed. Of course who, really likes to get filmed during their course work?  Here’s look at the basic gear list and how it was packed for any of you geeks: Sony A7sII, Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens, Rode RodeLink Wireless Film Kit, MeFoto Aluminum Travel Tripod.

As a Marketing Manager, it was awesome to be able to take a bit of a backseat and let these guys work their magic. The video piece is one of the most touching that Weston has put out there. Major thumbs up to these guys!
